M.H. de Young later purchased it for the City of San Francisco. The statue was originally a fountain. (The girl at left is filling a drinking cup with water from the fountain.)

Golden Gate Park. U.S. Grant Statue at left, replacement sphinx statues, Dore Vase. Originally constructed as the Fine Arts Building for 1894 Midwinter Fair, it was renamed Memorial Museum in 1895 and eventually became part of de Young Museum. (Grant's bust was toppled on June 19, 2020.)
